چکیده

The main purpose of this study is to improve estimation efficiency in obtaining fullinformation maximum likelihood (FIML) estimates of contextual effects in the framework of nonlinear multilevel latent variable model by adopting the Metropolis-Hastings Robbins-Monro algorithm (MH-RM; Cai, 2008, 2010a, 2010b). Results indicate that the MH-RM algorithm can produce FIML estimates and their standard errors efficiently, and the efficiency of MH-RM was more prominent for a cross-level interaction model, which requires five dimensional integration. Simulations, with various sampling and measurement structure conditions, were conducted to obtain information about the performance of nonlinear multilevel latent variable modeling compared to traditional hierarchical linear modeling. Results suggest that nonlinear multilevel latent variable modeling can more properly estimate and detect a contextual effect and a cross-level interaction than the traditional approach. As empirical illustrations, two subsets of data extracted from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA; OECD, 2000) were analyzed.

A Comparison of Estimation Methods for a Multi-unidimensional Graded Response IRT Model

This study compared several parameter estimation methods for multi-unidimensional graded response models using their corresponding statistical software programs and packages. Specifically, we compared two marginal maximum likelihood (MML) approaches (Bock-Aitkin expectation-maximum algorithm, adaptive quadrature approach), four fully Bayesian algorithms (Gibbs sampling, Metropolis-Hastings, Has...

Comparison of computational methods for high dimensional item factor analysis

In this article we conduct a simulation study to compare several methods for estimating confirmatory and exploratory item factor analysis using the software programs Mplus and IRTPRO. When the number of factors is bigger than three or four the standard numerical integration methodology used for computing the maximum-likelihood estimates is intractable due to the exponentially large number of in...

Maximum likelihood estimation and model comparison of nonlinear structural equation models with continuous and polytomous variables

Recently, it is recognized that nonlinear relationships among latent variables in a structural equation model are important. In this article, maximum likelihood (ML) analysis of a general nonlinear structural equation model that contains 5xed covariates in the measurement equation and the nonlinear structural equation is investigated. A MCEM algorithm is implemented to obtain the ML estimates, ...

Approximating Bayes Estimates by Means of the Tierney Kadane, Importance Sampling and Metropolis-Hastings within Gibbs Methods in the Poisson-Exponential Distribution: A Comparative Study

Here, we work on the problem of point estimation of the parameters of the Poisson-exponential distribution through the Bayesian and maximum likelihood methods based on complete samples. The point Bayes estimates under the symmetric squared error loss (SEL) function are approximated using three methods, namely the Tierney Kadane approximation method, the importance sampling method and the Metrop...

Bayesian Estimation of State-Space Models Using the Metropolis-Hastings Algorithm within Gibbs Sampling∗

In this paper, an attempt is made to show a general solution to nonlinear and/or non-Gaussian state space modeling in a Bayesian framework, which corresponds to an extension of Carlin, Polson and Stoffer (1992) and Carter and Kohn (1994, 1996). Using the Gibbs sampler and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, an asymptotically exact estimate of the smoothing mean is obtained from any nonlinear and...
